Oh, man. What have I gotten myself into?!

I decided that the switch needs to be made. I love this little blog, love everything about it. I love that it shows up in the first page of Google search for my area. I love the history we've had, all the wonderful posts. And I'm sad to lose all that!

Change is good, right? Please tell me change is good. Phew. Okay.

My new blog will be at basemanstudios.com/blog, but it won't be ready for a little while. I'll have to go through and get things set up, organized, figure out what in the world I'm even doing... eeek.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated and let you know when it's ready for your viewing pleasure!

5 Reasons to Book Your Wedding Photographer Now! | Appleton

The big question: how soon should you book your wedding photographer?

Well, the short answer is "NOW"...

This is the long answer:

It's never too soon to line up and secure your wedding vendors, especially if you have a popular wedding date.

As a general rule of thumb, the higher dollar amount of an investment required for the vendor (read: venues, catering, dj's, cake artist, etc.), the sooner you should secure them. In fact, as a wedding photographer, I feel most comfortable when I hear from clients at least 8-12 months before the wedding.

Time is key to get the most out of your full-service wedding photographer. Why?

1. Securing Your Date
In most cases, a photographer will not hold your date for you until there's a signed agreement and an initial investment. If your wedding day falls in a popular time of year, you might be struggling to find a photographer you like that's available. June is still a popular month, but the fall months like September and October are becoming trendy as well.

2. Engagement Session
You will definitely want an engagement session, which is most likely included. This fun, relaxed 1-2 hour session shows off your personality as a couple before the wedding day. It helps build that relationship of trust between you and your photographer, while helping the photographer see how you interact together, react in front of a camera, and discover favorite poses/styles with you two.

3. Products with your Engagement Images
Often, there are several different things the photographer can create with your engagement images! My personal favorites are engagement-photo-guestbooks (which your guests will rave about!), blog preview cards, and gift registry cards. And don't forget about save-the-dates and invitations! Many photographers can custom-design stationary with your images. The sooner you sign with your photographer, the sooner you can get working on all these fun ideas!

4. Payment Plans
Whether your photographer offers monthly payment options, lump sums, or the balance due before/on the wedding day, the sooner you book, the more time you have to get that balance paid off! It's much easier to squirrel away a hundred dollars or so a month, than to come up with a few grand right on the spot. Trust me on this. :)

5. Developing a Relationship of Trust
It all comes back to this: you and your photographer need to get to know each other. Throughout your engagement period, your photographer will communicate back and forth about the engagement session, products, payments, and answer general questions you might have. Take note: do they respond to your emails, text messages, and/or phone calls in a timely manner? Do they take the initiative in contacting you, or do they wait for a reminder from you?

Bottom line: The more you get to know your photographer, the more you will trust them. And trust leads to a happy wedding day and lasting marriage. ;)

3 Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Photographer | Appleton Wedding Photographer

Time for an informational post, courtesy of yours truly. (Does anyone else think they should officially change the spelling to "truely"? I think so.)

As many couples become engaged over Christmas and New Years, this time of year gets dubbed as the wedding planning season. Back when my husband and I were engaged, I joked that if we could just get through wedding planning, we'd have smooth sailing for our marriage. Or was that just picking the items for our gift registry?? Either way. ;)

It can be very overwhelming as you start ~~spending hours browsing Pinterest~~ doing research online, signing up for bridal websites, downloading to-do lists, and buying multiple binders to organize all your ideas.. no? Maybe that was just me. :)

However, I wanted to offer a few tips for just one area that means a lot to me: choosing a wedding photographer. From a photographers' perspective.

#1:

The most important thing to consider is the photographer's talent and expertise. Many times this is not shown by having photographed XX number of weddings, but the quality of images from each wedding they have photographed.

There's this funny thing about weddings... family and friends come together and celebrate on this one day that is centered around you, the bride and groom. It's a once-in-a-lifetime day of joy and happiness. If you should choose a photographer that fails capture this wonderful, yet fleeting day, there's no re-do.

Four out of five times when I let it slip in conversation that I am a wedding photographer, the other person has to tell me about a horrible experience of theirs, one of their friends, even family members. Stories that would be nightmares to me: no-shows on the wedding day, no communication for 6 months after the wedding day, up to re-renting tuxes and hiring another photographer to capture a mock wedding. Ack!

So, whether the photographer has 100 weddings or 10 weddings under his or her belt, make sure you are comfortable with their talent level and expertise for capturing your very special day.

#2:

Hire a photographer that you would consider having as a personal friend. Make sure your personalities mesh.

Honestly, your wedding photographer spends more time with you, the bride and groom, on your wedding day than even your bridal party. I always tell my potential clients in consultations this very fact... and then "if you don't like, don't hire me!" Heh. Maybe that's why some never respond... ;)

Those big group photos with your crazy aunts and uncles that you've been dreading? The right photographer can keep the whole process light and fun, while still keeping control and moving efficiently. Same with the bridal party.

Once again, make sure the photographer you choose is one that you enjoy as a person. If you have a grand time in the consultation, laughing, chatting, etc, good chance that you'll love having him or her around for your entire wedding day.

#3:

Finally, consider the investment required.

It's hard to compare photographers because we are all so different... in our style, our service, our personalities, and the products we offer. It is not necessarily apples to apples.

If you have found a photographer who's images simply "wow" you, you have met him or her and are impressed by their personality and service, then it is time to look at the packages or collections and what you'll be receiving to remember your day.

We all would like to have a wedding photography budget of $20,000, but that is not realistic. Be honest with yourselves... and with your photographer. I find it most helpful if the couple tells me their budgeted number during the consultation. If you need to stay within a certain limit, let us know. We appreciate that, I promise, and there is no shame in telling a vendor that you simply adore their work, but don't have the budget for it.

Many times we might have a few tricks up our sleeves, like gift registry or payment plans that can help manage the investment, so be sure to ask about those.

It's been a while. It's funny how we know "the holidays" come around every single year, but they always seem to take us by surprise. hah!

Can I explain the honor it is to photograph your best friend's wedding? Not really. :) How do you find the words to tell how you feel as you watch two people, whom you love, pledging their love for each other? All I can say is I was sooo happy to be there.

I'm still not too happy about the fact that Troy brought her down to Oklahoma (14 hour drive, anyone?!), but it was definitely worth the trip.

It was a beautiful, simple November day, at least by Wisconsin standards. ;)

They chose to do a "first look," which I love to photograph. :) I think the bride and groom spending an intimate couple moments together before the ceremony is wonderful. Not only do you get some amazing images, it's so calming to have that anticipation out of the way.

They're so cute. :)

A few days ago, I posted about a recent Heirloom Album for Nathan and Tiffany. Just recently, I also received Chase&Sarah's wedding album back from the lab. [ Click here to view Chase and Sarah's original wedding post.]

Wow, talk about another one that I just want to keep and not give to them!! :D

The Memory Book is a little less "fancy" than the Heirloom Album, with press-printed paper rather than photographic paper adhered to a thicker substrate. The Memory Book is similar to the coffee-table-book style many people recognize.

However, these aren't just any coffee-table-style books. They are custom-designed by yours truly and professionally printed and bound by my lab in Iowa. I always tell my couples that both of these albums will last years and years... barring kids and natural disasters. ;)

I know it's hard to visualize things, especially final products. So when you see the proof of your album, it's hard to realize just how awesome it will be once printed.

I was so impressed with the beauty of this album when I opened the box yesterday. I didn't even want to give this Heirloom Album to Nate and Tiffany... I just wanted to keep it for myself! hah! [See their original wedding photography post here.]

I cannot tell you how incredible this Heirloom album is... so I'll try my best to show you through these images (taken by my point-and-shoot Canon camera with lamp lighting :D).

If you've sat down and discussed wedding collections with me, you know that that I offer two different types of albums: the Heirloom Album and the Memory Book.

This is the Heirloom Album, once again, and worth every cent.

One of my favorite parts of senior sessions is talking.. Andrew tested my knowledge of history, and filled me on some biology. Now history was always very enjoyable, but I could have skipped biology entirely when I was in high school. :)

Brad and Becca's day was very relaxing and enjoyable.

It was quite chilly, rainy, and cold... but the fall theme was very warm and inviting.

I think I re-fell in love with black and white... it just fits Becca's simple elegance and seemed perfect for her getting-ready images.

The ceremony was held at the Hope Lutheran Church in DePere, Wisconsin, and the reception was held at the Swan Club, also in DePere.

It was a very lovely day!

The littlest man gave us 12-months of amazing cooperation, giggly smiles, and sweet gibberish. Now? Not so much. :)

Nevertheless, we had a great time photographing in and near Doty Park, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The kids enjoyed the "ducks" and their "baby" (Oscar is the newest addition to their family), and we adults enjoyed wandering after the kids, carrying gear, and pushing the stroller. Thankfully the evening was beautiful, the weather gorgeous, and the company very enjoyable.

Chase and Sarah are such a joy to know. Sarah is one of those people that you just feel special when you're around her, and Chase is silly, funny, and yet has a deep love and appreciation for his bride.

It was the most beautiful day for a wedding. It sprinkled that morning, but then cleared out into a sunny day with puffy clouds. There were married on land that has been in their family for generations - - Sarah's mom and dad were married in the same exact spot along with one of her sister's. The backwoods near Waupaca, Wisconsin, have a lot going for them. :)

It was a very thoughtful, simple ceremony... and lots of joyful tears were shed. I was happy I had something to concentrate on, as their love for each other was so touching.

Let me first preface this by saying that I understand everyone is busy. I know I'm not the only one that has things to do. :)

However, I got to thinking yesterday about all that's taken place here during this wonderful month of July, and these kind of numbers are unprecedented here at Baseman Studios Photography.

I've been so incredibly fortunate to build this business (for those who are new to Baseman Studios, the business is only officially 1.5 years old) up to this point so fast.

I'm so incredible fortunate to get to know all my clients, and each one has left an impact on who I am today. I firmly believe that photography has enriched my life beyond any other "job" I could have... and it's because of YOU, my amazing clients. So, THANK YOU, for allowing me to photograph your friends, families, children, seniors, and weddings.

I also understand that many studios and photography businesses have numbers that can blow my doors off. That's great... I'm happy we're all doing well! I just got excited when I began to total these things up.

Now, take a look at what an awesome July I had! :) And those of you helping me behind the scenes, you know who you are... it means more to me than I can say!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some more serious computer work to do! :)

It has been super warm this summer (ahh, love it!), so Heather's idea of an ice cream cone fit perfectly into the end of our fun senior portrait session. Always a first for everything, they treated me to ice cream also. :) How could I refuse?! I fully recommend Cherry On Top Ice Cream Shop right here in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Heather does a lot with drama, and is stage manager for NHS's musical this coming fall. I wonder if she can score me some discount tickets? ;)

We did have an incredible time, however, despite the mosquitoes, sauna-like temps, and mobile changing studio.

Jason and Kristie are one of the most lovely couples I think I've ever met. From the very fist time we met at our consultation, things just clicked. We had the most amazing engagement session last year (which you can view here, here, here, here, and here) and our "relationship" has just gotten better with each phone call, email, meeting, etc.

Both Jason and Kristie have been through so much in their lives already, and it's such a joy to experience their love for each other, their families, and their friends. I honestly think that's the first time I've cried during a wedding slideshow at one of my client's weddings.

It was such an honor to get to know them both, meet their friends and family, and be a part of their spectacular day. I'm always sad at the end of the night when I have to leave, but I was especially sad that evening... it was like saying bye to amazing friends!

Most of you are probably very familiar with HDR photography. The colors can look gorgeous, there's an infinite amount of detail, and at the extreme end, images can look fake. Well, this is the first time I've tried HDR.

Don't laugh! I was simply shooting around with my little Canon Powershot camera when I was visiting in New York (state) this last weekend. This probably wasn't the best of subjects, as it seems to be drab and dull, color-wise. I wasn't on a tripod, so my images weren't exactly lined up. And there's plenty of other things that annoy me, such as my wide-angle lens on my point-and-shoot.

Oh well. It was fun... I'll have to do more of this in the future!

You know those people that when you're around them, you just feel relaxed and comfortable? How wonderful is a wedding when both the bride and groom are so relaxed, warm, and friendly?!

It was gloomy, rainy, and plain miserable outside. The ceremony had to be moved indoors 15 minutes before "kick-off." There was a "Bears" wedding next door. (No joke. The bridesmaids were wearing alternating orange and navy dresses, and the whole place was decked out in Bears memorabilia.) The sprinkler system started leaking halfway through the dance. No matter what went wrong, they were still so relaxed, poised, and positively glowing with love for each other, their sweet little girl, and all their friends and family that gathered.

Every wedding I photograph, I think I fall in love with my "job" a little bit more. I can't say enough how much of an honor it is to be trusted with something so precious as your memories!

Best wishes to this bride and groom! I hope you enjoy these images as much as I have been!

What's the next big thing since sliced bread?

Portrait order sessions!

Why?

About 2-3 weeks after your {insert adjective here: amazing, fun, phenomenal} portrait session, we get together once again. This will be the first time you see what was captured during your session, except for some previews that I show you from the back of my camera.

Yes, this does mean cutting back on the sneak peeks. There's a great reason for this, though. I want to be able to show you actual, printed proofs. Once I filter through and do a basic edit of our session's images, they get sent off to my lab. Actual 5x7 prints. Honest.

When we're together for the ordering session, we do a little organizing and make some piles. One pile for the "yes" prints, one pile for the "maybe," and the last pile for the "no" prints. Isn't it easier to make a decision when you don't have to wander through images on a screen? I sure think so! Comparing images side-by-side just became incredibly easy!

And, while I'm in your home, we can talk about wall spaces and what prints and sizes would look best. If I have already been there for your complimentary in-house design session, this will be a breeze.

Isn't it a little overwhelming to sit down with a proof book or images online and struggle to put anything down on paper? This is such a daunting task that some never even get their order accomplished! We build the order together, making sure to only select what you really need and want. This is the only time reserved for ordering, so it is necessary to have some numbers in mind already for gift prints, wallets, and that type of thing.

After we put together your order, the magic editing process is done. Then images you've selected for prints are posted online for your friends and family to see, and your prints are delivered to you once they arrive from the lab and are quality-assured.

Ahhh. Doesn't that sound so much easier? This is your photographer: the person who understands photography, listens to what you want for your home and for others. Then they help you every step of the way, answer all your questions, and take care of everything for you.

So simple. And the high-quality, fully-customized service that you would expect from Baseman Studios Photography.

As I sat through the WPPA (Wisconsin Professional Photographers' Association) spring convention this year, it dawned on me that there were some definite improvements I could make for the business. It's so easy to get inspired at these conventions; a weekend focused solely on photography and business/marketing is so refreshing. And obviously, in the end, the purpose is to provide an even better service for you, my clients!

If there are photographers who aren't a part of PPA (the national photography association) or WPPA, this is a little plug to join. The support, camaraderie, and overall benefits you can get from belonging to an association is great. Most programs have mentoring available, where they pair you up with an unbelievably awesome pro, and you can learn from them. The resources you have access to is incredible also. So, join! :)

Anyway, it became clear that there were a few things I can add in to my business to make the service better for you! If you've read through the text in my site, you might have an inkling of what's coming. :)

Right off the bat, I'm offering a complimentary in-house design consultation. Before we even have our session, I'm available to come into your home and help you figure out what you need and want. This includes measuring walls, figuring out sizes, wall collages, even the style of your home and the right clothing so the portraits fit in with your decor.

The point of this complimentary in-house design consultation is for us to get to know each other a bit. It also allows me to photograph with the end in mind. So you need a horizontal 16x20 with two vertical 8x10's on each side? Perfect, I can make sure I photograph portraits specifically for those spots.

It's genius, really. :) In addition to everything mentioned above, it will make the ordering process go much more smoothly. The complimentary in-house design consultation isn't completely necessary, but has so many benefits.... and you get an hour or so of my time, free!

Yes, yes. My first sweet little Baby Steps kiddo. And he's turned one! Can you believe it?

I love the Baby Steps program, because I really get to know the parents and kids... as I'm with you every 3 months to capture another milestone. It's been so incredible, and I've been so lucky to develop a relationship with this awesome little guy... and his mom, dad, and big brother. :)

Speaking of the big brother, he's turning 5 shortly! Couldn't let that event pass without some photo memories!

Just wanted to put a quick note on here as well that I will be out for the rest of the week.

My older brother passed away early Sunday morning, so I'll be heading back to my hometown in northwest Iowa to be with my family.

Back when I was in photography school, I had him pose for a 'personality portrait.' He used to love to play guitar and sing.. very talented. The hubby and I went out a few different times to watch and hear him play. This was one of those times. :)

I love this image (right below)... makes me think of warmer days. I have a sister-in-law spending a semester of college up in Alaska right now, so I shouldn't complain... but wow, it's been cold here lately. I start to get pretty nostalgic this time of year for summer. :)

I love wedding day details. In my mind, the details make up a wedding. Don't care about your wedding day details? Too busy? Hire a wedding planner such as Details, a professional planning company (Appleton), All Dressed Up Event Planning (Neenah), Seize the Day Events (Green Bay), to take care of these details for you! They're also exceptional at the "big stuff" too.

Some wedding planners and vendors offer incentives or mutual-client discounts. This is why: wedding vendors appreciate other wedding vendors who are great to YOU, their clients! Getting recommendations from other vendors is almost an insurance policy, if you will, because they know the reputation and quality that company/vendor offers.

Besides being the modern, hip thing to do, it offers you time before the ceremony to see each other, spend an intimate moment together, and just relax a bit. Weddings can be stressful and the momentum just keeps building. A "first look" gives you that little refresher time to breath, relax, and be with each other.

Not to mention, it allows for some great family, wedding party, and just-the-two-of-you picture time!

When I'm 'just' a contracted second-shooter for weddings, sometimes I like to have a little more fun.

Now, in honor of January being some unspoken national wedding planning month, these great images from last October are being brought to the table.

Meet Fred & Wynne... they had been a couple for quite a few years by the time they were married on 10.02.10. It was easy to see their quiet, underlying love for each other throughout the day. They are a very down-to-earth couple loved by family, friends, and neighbors.

Both the ceremony and the reception/dance were held at The Marq,which is a lovely facility. Just as if we'd ordered it, the sprinkles went away, clouds opened up and a bright ray of sunshine burst forth as Wynne came down the aisle. Lovely!
